This was the first match between teams from across the American/Candian border. It was perpetrated by a hoax when a "Mr Phillpotts" invited a team frm America to a match in Canda. In fact, nothing was known about this when the New Yorkers arrived. A hastily arranged committee meeting saw the Toronto club arrange a challenge match for $500. The "Mr Phillpotts" was not GA Phillpotts, and his identity has never been published.
