Glamorgan CCC came into being on July 6th, 1888 at a meeting at the Angel Hotel, in Cardiff that was attended by over 30 representatives of the leading clubs in South Wales. In August 1888 the newly formed organisation staged its first match - a friendly against the Llwynypia club - and then between 1889 and 1896 Glamorgan CCC were involved in a number of friendly matches against other teams representing counties that were not first-class, as well as touring teams and other scratch sides.
In 1897 Glamorgan were elevated to the Minor County Championship, before securing first-class status in 1921, and entering the County Championship.
Before 1888 a number of pseudo-county teams existed, including the South Wales Cricket Club, who played friendly matches between 1859 and 1886, mainly against leading club teams in the West of England as well as gentlemen`s clubs and county sides in the Home Counties.
Various individuals also raised `county` elevens between 1861 and 1867, before a meeting at The Castle Hotel in Neath led to the creation of the Glamorganshire CCC in 1869. This club played a number of fixtures until 1875 chiefly against sides representing Carmarthenshire, Breconshire and other neighbouring counties. Members of the defunct South Wales CC and Glamorganshire club were instrumental in the creation of Glamorgan CCC in 1888, and without their involvement the present county club might not have been formed.
