Player: | EW Dawson |
Edward Dawson was according to Wisden "a cricketer who by sheer application and adherence to the basic principles of batting reached a higher place than many of greater natural ability". A successful schoolboy player at Eton, he honed his abilities at Cambridge, where he opened the batting for four years, the last of which (1927) he acted as captain. He played for Leicestershire after the end of University term and in 1928 became their captain. A reliable bat with a very correct method based on a straight bat, and excellent captain (although he was always openly grateful for the support and advice he received from his senior professional, George Geary), he toured New Zealand in 1928/29, playing in the first Test matches against them. He was also a fine fielder, particularly on the off-side.
