Brief profile of Jacques Kallis
by Dr.A.K.Hignell

Player:JH Kallis

Jacques Kallis, the gifted South African all-rounder joined Glamorgan during 1999 against playing for the Springboks in the World Cup. A groin injury delayed his debut until the National League game on July 25th against Surrey at Pontypridd, but it turned out to be a debut worth waiting for, with Kallis producing an explosive display of clean hitting, scoring 155* - the highest ever individual innings in the competition for the Welsh county and the best performance ever on debut for the club.

Kallis added a further one day hundred later in the season against Somerset, as well as a Championship century against Nottinghamshire at Colwyn Bay, during which time he shared a partnership of 216 with Steve James for the second wicket.

He had made his first-class debut in 1993/94 as an 18 year old for Western Province and after hours of coaching from Duncan Fletcher, the Western Province (and later Glamorgan) coach, Kallis progressed into the South African team during the 1995/96 series with England.
