'Jeff' Linton was a talented all-round cricketer, playing in the Charterhouse XI in 1926 and 1927, and captaining the school side in the latter season. Having been born in Llandaff, he held a qualification for Glamorgan and in 1932 Linton played twice for the Welsh county.
 
Linton had a distinguished military career with the Royal artillery and in 1944 he was awarded the D.S.O. after escaping from a prisoner of war camp. After the War he was a senior instructor in anti-tank warfare at the School of Artillery and was elevated to the rank of Brigadier.
