Player: | E Storer |
Lancashire 1865-78
Born 18.5.1838 Clay Cross, Derbyshire.
Died 1.7.1880 Hulme, Manchester.

5ft.7 inches tall and weighing between 11 and 13 stone, he was a left-hand batsman, who bowled "right, round-armed, fast, and very straight." He usually fielded at slip.
His first recorded professional engagement was at Ahton-under-Lyne in 1861 and 1862. In 1863 he was at the Manchester Club and in 1864 he started his year at Exeter College, Oxford moving on the Longsight, Manchester later in the season and staying there until 1868.
It was while he was at Longsight that he accompanied three Longsight amateurs, E.J.Bousfield, L.H.Moorsom and R.Slater, to London to play for Lancashire in their second first-class match, against Middlesex, at Islington, on 7 and 8 August 1865. He scored 6 not out and 23 and took one wicket for 29 runs.
In 1869 he was with the Manchester Club and from 1870 to 1875 at Bury, where he lived.
In 1877 he was with the Broughton Club, Manchester and the following year was back again with the Manchester Club.
It was on 13-15 June 1878 that he turned in his best bowling performance for Lancashire, and by coincidence it was against his native county, Derbyshire, at Old Trafford. In Derbyshire's first innings he took five wickets for 12 runs and in the second innings he took three for 25.
Two years later he was dead and a Bury newspaper recorded "The first charity match the club ever played was on behalf of Mrs. Storer and children, on 30th April 1881, as some recognition of her late husband's services during his many years stay."
At the time of the 1881 Census Eliza Storer, widow aged 41 born at Claycross, Derbyshire, a housekeeper, is living at 48 Upper Moss Lane, Hulme, Manchester, with five sons, Arthur W. aged 14, Walter H. aged 12, Herbert C. aged 9, Samuel P. aged 7 and Francis aged 11 months, and two daughters Clementine aged 5 and Ethel E. aged 3. Alice Dudley and her two children are visitors and Alice Heming, a 66 year old widow and her unmarried daughter aged 40 are lodgers.
