Match report: Lancs v Scotland in NCL 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Scotland

Summary

The Scottish Saltires produced a first-class all round display to collect their third NCL victory of the season. Meanwhile, another Jekyll and Hyde performance from Lancashire, left the home supporters extremely frustrated, perplexed and exasperated. Such inconsistent performances will not equate to promotion to division one. Lancashire won the toss and included John Wood and Chris Schofield, to replace Iain Sutcliffe and Steven Crook from the Hampshire match. An early wicket and a slow scoring rate initially tilted the game in Lancashire's favour, but patient batting, inspired field placing, and clever bowling - combined with a poor one-day cricket surface, resulted in a comfortable win for the amateur side.

Bowling Performance of the Day

Glen Chapple bowled a fine spell of 1 for 18 from 8 overs, and did not conceded a boundary. However, Sajid Mahmood bowled a full spell of 9 overs 3 for 41, and did not appear to be out of his depth.

Batting Performance of the Day

It was strange how Peter Martin appeared the most comfortable at the crease. He hit the ball straight and hard, and scored Lancashire's only six.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Lancashire held several fine outfield catches. The best was Alec Swann's low dive to dismiss Stanger.

Highlight of the Day

There were very few highlights on offer for the home supporters - at least Lancashire won the toss and the weather held-up for a change!

Lowlights of the Day

  • Chris Schofield's bowling (Again) - every other spinner was difficult to score against and never conceded more than 4.5 runs per over. Chris's 3 overs produced 21 runs @ 7 per over and included 2 huge sixes
  • Glen Chapple's batting - worry has turned to major concern
  • Carl Hooper's run out - It was not Hooper's fault - there was never a run on when Law called him through for a quick single - the throw was also sensational.
  • Stuart Law was stumped from a wide delivery - a truly horrible way to be dismissed.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

  • Why did Glen Chapple only bowl 8 overs while Schofield bowled 3?
  • Lancashire's batting order - I prefer Law to bat at number 3 and exploit the field restrictions - Lancashire batted themselves to a grinding halt - again!
