Match report day 4: Surrey v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Surrey v Lancashire

Summary for Day 4

Despite a brave, hard fought battle by the Lancashire's bowlers, Surrey were able to hang on for a draw. With the exception of the last couple of sessions, Surrey had been completed outclassed and comprehensively outplayed. In boxing terminology - the fight would have been stopped a long time ago. Lancashire can take alot a positive aspects from the game, and their confidence must be exceptionally high approaching the game against Nottinghamshire at Old Trafford. In truth, the pitch never really allowed Lancashire a sporting chance. It resembled a tennis ball being bowled on concrete. Added to this fact, Surrey's batsmen played with substantially more due care and patience. They also irradiated the poor stroke from their selection of shots. Only briefly, just after lunch with Surrey reeling on 150 for 5, did the visitors appear to be in with a chance of victory. Unfortunately, as the ball aged and the bowlers wilted, the pitch played even slower.
