Match report day 2: Lancs v Essex in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Essex

Summary for Day 2

Only the true cricket purist would have enjoyed the second days play in this match with Essex. On a very slow wicket, with the ball not coming-on to the bat, the flow of runs resembled a dripping tap - the crowd were left having to cheer the odd single. All credit must go to Iain Sutcliffe and Mark Chilton for establishing a match winning platform.

Bowling Performance of the Day

Ex-Lancashire player Ronnie Irani bowled with enormous spirit. His final figures of 4 for 59 from 32 overs were truly remarkable.

Batting Performance of the Day

This honour was shared by Iain Sutcliffe 109 runs from 288 balls, and Mark Chilton 106 runs from 203 balls. Together, they added 83 runs for the fourth wicket in 30 overs.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Both James Middlebrook and Graham Napier held superb outfield catches to dismiss Martin (JM) ,Hegg and Chilton (GN).

Highlights of the Day

  • Iain Sutcliffe's maiden hundred for Lancashire
  • Mark Chilton's second consecutive hundred for the club - and his straight 6 to take him from 94 to 100
  • Watching Graham Gooch fielding for Essex.
  • Following-on, Essex lost 2 wickets in 2 overs

Lowlights of the Day

  • Over vociferous and persistently stupid appealing from Essex
  • The poor batting form of Glen Chapple - 27 balls for 1 run
  • The disappointing debut batting performance from Carl Hooper 8 runs from 20 balls and a tame dismissal.
  • The amount of "sledging", and lack of respect shown by Ronnie Irani towards Stuart Law during his brief spell at the crease.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

The umpires performed well considering the pressure they were put under by the Essex fielders (See above point 1). Perhaps a word in the ear of the Essex captain was required.
