Scorecard: | Warwickshire v Lancashire |
Summary for Day 3
Outstanding, imperious and breathtaking best sum Lancashire's batting performance on the third day. Following on from last years 586 at Old Trafford, and 575 for 6 declared earlier this year, Warwickshire's bowlers were put to the sword once again by the visitors. On this occasion, Lancashire amassed 781 runs and established a useful lead of 332 by the close of play. Poor light during the final session of the day prevented Lancashire from declaring and asking their hosts to survive an awkward period at the crease. If Lancashire set attacking fields and bowl well on the final day, they might be able to snatch a dramatic victory and set up a thrilling final home match next week against Sussex
Bowling Performance of the Day
This was not a day to remember for Warwickshire's bowlers. They struggled to take a wicket until 13 balls before the tea interval. The ball seldom beat the bat and the pitch offered minimum assistance. Alan Richardson bowled with tremendous endeavour throughout the day - he finished with 2 for 128 from 45 overs. Mark Wagh collected 7 wickets for 222 runs @ 5.55 runs per over. Warwickshire bowled 24 no-balls during the visitors innings with Melvyn Betts the worst offender (11)
Batting Performance of the Day
Words can not truly explain the partnership which Carl Hooper and Stuart Law posted on the third days play. Law stroked the ball immaculately in his innings of 168 runs from 273 balls (23 x 4), while Hooper powered his way to 177 runs from 221 balls (16 x 4 & 8 x 6). The pair added 360 for the fifth wicket before Hooper hauled out on the long-off boundary. The partnership added 148 in the morning session and exactly 200 in the afternoon session before Hooper's wicket - outstanding, faultless and total carnage!
Fielding Performance of the Day
Warwickshire were a shell-shocked side. However, they maintained their discipline well and held all but one of the their catches as the day progressed. Keith Piper did miss one stumping opportunity with Lancashire on 703 for 6, and substitute fielder Allen dropped a difficult chance on the long-off boundary the ball before Lancashire's last wicket fell
Highlights of the Day
- Hooper & Law's partnership of 360
- Beating the 5th wicket record stand
- Posting the fourth highest ever partnership - see below
- Scoring 204 runs in the afternoon session and 503 runs in one day
- Four batsmen scoring a century in the same innings for the second time in 3 matches (The same 4 players again - Chilton 125, Loye 102, Law 168, Hooper 177)
- Gratefully receiving 67 extras - 48 courtesy of no-balls and 5 wides
- Watching umpire Constant signaling a boundary while laying flat on the floor after just avoiding a powerful straight drive by Hooper. Constant then took hold of Law's helmet and gestured to put it on his head!
Lowlights of the Day
- Not beating the all time record partnership for any wicket by Lancashire - Highest 371 by Watson/Tyldesley 1928 (1928); 368 by MacLaren/Spooner (1903); 364 by Atherton/Fairbrother (1990); 360 by Hooper/Law (2003)
- Bad light denied Lancashire the opportunity of declaring approximately one hour before the close of play. Consequently, Hegg had no other choice than to bat on and accumulate runs
Contentious Discussion Point of the Day
