Rahul Dravid (37 batting) and R Vinay Kumar (7 batting) were at the crease as the hosts look to consolidate their position on a slow and low wicket.

Opting to bat, Karnataka began on a strong note with Robin Uthappa and KB Pawan putting 42 runs for the first wicket. Uthappa was in good nick before before he was trapped leg before by left arm spinner Praveen Gupta. Pawan and Ganesh Satish then continued the good work. Left-arm medium pacer R P Singh became the killjoy as he produced two wickets in five balls, having Pawan and Satish snared behind the wickets.

But Dravid and Manish Pandey thwarted the UP surge, putting together 108 runs for the fourth wicket.
