Event: | Australia in New Zealand 2009/10 |
DateLine: 9th March 2010

Australia powered by Haddin's aggressive 110 took lead in the five match Chappell-Hadlee Trophy giving the the Kiwi camp a lot to think. Put into bat first New Zealand could manage a below-par total of 245 which was easily chased by Australia.

Ponting surprised everybody as he elected to field first as he seemed to trust his bowlers to restrict a Kiwi batting line-up.Harris did not disappoint his skipper as he removed Ingram (5, 3b, 1x4) with an exceptional outswinger that simply squared up the right-hander. McCullum (23, 25b, 3x4) batted the way he knew while Guptill (21, 28 b, 4x4) gave him good support. It seemed that the duo would give the hosts a perfect base before Bollinger removed McCullum . Guptill failed to keep his off-drive down as he found White at short cover.

The job of taking the Kiwi score to challenging one fell to Ross Taylor (62, 66b, 2x6, 4x4) who after initial circumspection began to open up. The right-hander looked well set for a big score before he played an ill-advised pull shot to be dismissed. New Zealand's hopes for a huge score came dashing down when Scott Styris (41, 51b, 1x6, 2x4) chipped lamely to Harris at long-off. Gareth Hopkins (45, 51b, 2x6, 3x4) played a little gem to put the innings back on track and finally the hosts were bowled out for 245 in 46.2 overs.

For the Australian side Harris and Johnson picked up three wickets each while Watson took two wickets.

Australia in reply never looked in any sort of issue as Haddin (110, 121b, 5x6, 7x4) and Ponting (69, 71b, 9x4) steadied the innings after the early loss of Watson (15, 22b, 3x4). The pair pulverised a toothless Kiwi bowling attack into submission. The Kiwi bowlers at no stage looked like disturbing the Australian batsmen in the middle and in the end Australia simply sauntered to the target.
