When bad light stopped play on Day one, the Lankan side was placed at 293 for 4 but the scorecard did not tell the whole story. For the first time in the series the Indian bowlers maintained consistent pressure on the Lankan batsmen. It was due to some exceptional batting skills and luck that the Lankan batsmen were able to survive in the middle.

Sangakkara won the toss once again and had no hesitation in batting first on a pitch that had a little smattering of grass. Ishant Sharma brought smiles to the faces of the Indian side when he had Parnavitana caught behind but Dilshan and Sangakkara steadied the innings. Sangakkara could have being dismissed on 23 when Mithun bowling round the stumps got the shoulder of the Lankan skipper's bat and flew to Laxman at second slip. Raina at first slip out of enthusiasm tried to take the catch but in the end dropped it. Dilshan shelved away his attacking instincts and batted with responsibility but just at the stroke of lunch was run-out due to some excellent work from Vijay at silly point.

After lunch Sangakkara was joined at the crease by Jayawardene and the most reliable duo of Sri Lanka pushed the scoring forward. It was at this time that the Indian bowlers bowled with excellent discipline drying up the runs. Sangakkara out of frustration tried to deposit Ojha into the stands but found Sehwag at long-on. Jayawardene and Samaraweera weathered some stupendous bowling from the Indian spinners before Ojha trapped the former leg before. Just when the day was drawing to a close the umpires deemed that light was unfit to continue and called of play for the day.
