Derbyshire thought so highly of the 17 year old James Chapman in 2003 that they gave him a professional contract mainly to deter other counties from poaching him. However, 2 years later he had been released after playing just one forgettable innings in one forgettable friendly against Durham University. A stress fracture of the foot hampered him in 2005, although even before that his time in the second XI saw the cheap dismissals far outweigh those of substance. It is always disappointing to see a young player not fulfil the hopes expected of them, although as Chapman is still only 19 his County career need not be finished.
