Bashar to lead Bangladesh in World Cup

Habibul Bashar will captain Bangladesh in the 2007 World Cup to be held in the West Indies, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Thursday. “Habibul Bashar will lead the Bangladesh team till the end of the 2007 World Cup,” the board said in a statement.

 

The 33-year-old Bashar is Bangladesh’s most successful batsman with 2,838 runs from 42 Test matches at an average of 34.60. He has also scored 1,663 runs in 82 one-day internationals. He has been the national captain since January 2004 when he replaced Khaled Mahmud.

 

Bashar has led his team to 12 one-day wins, including one each against world champions Australia, India and Sri Lanka. “I am very happy to know the board's decision," Bashar said. “It will help me to come out with a plan for the World Cup.”

 

Bangladesh will play eight one-day matches in Kenya and Zimbabwe in July-August before hosting Zimbabwe for seven matches in December. It will also take part in the International Cricket Council's Champions Trophy in India in October.
