Off-spinner Jamie Dalrymple was included in the England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan to be held at Old Trafford from July 27.

Dalrymple’s Middlesex team-mate Andrew Strauss was retained as skipper for the remainder of the four-Test series after it was announced on Saturday that Flintoff, who missed the drawn opener at Lord’s, would require surgery on his injured ankle.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: “As we will now be without Andrew Flintoff for an extended period, the selectors have appointed Andrew Strauss as captain for the rest of the Test series against Pakistan. We are very disappointed to lose Flintoff as both a player and a captain. The medical staff from both Lancashire and England had worked extremely hard to try and help him overcome the injury without recourse to surgery and Andrew himself had done everything that was asked of him. His priority now will be to ensure he is fully fit for the Ashes in Australia," Graveney added.

Bowlers Ashley Giles and Simon Jones are also currently sidelined with hip and knee injury respectively.

The squad: Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss (captain), Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Geraint Jones, Liam Plunkett, Matthew Hoggard, Stephen Harmison, Monty Panesar, Jon Lewis, Sajid Mahmood and Jamie Dalrymple.
