In a top order crisis it is to Simon Katich that the Australian team looks forward to restoring order. Whether it is in the Test arena or in ODIs the pugnacious left-hander can be counted upon to play the rescue act with panache. He doesn’t just stick it out there but carries the fight into the enemy camp as it were while adding substantially to the score. Katich has had to battle it out for a place in the strong Aussie batting line up but with qualities like courage, temperament and technical skill he has managed not only to earn a regular place but make the most of it as well. He is a permanent fixture in the one-day squad where with his steadying influence he is an ideal partner for Adam Gilchrist. But an embarrassment of riches has meant that he last played in a Test nearly a year ago. However given his combative skills a comeback can never be ruled out. A battler to the hilt he played a vital role in 2004 when Australia won their first series in India for 35 years. A year earlier his valiant exploits – including his maiden Test hundred - prevented India from winning their second series in Australia. A proud Aussie one of his most memorable moments came when his first ODI hundred helped Australia to come from behind to win the VB Series in 2005-06. His occasional left arm chinaman bowling too can be surprisingly effective.
