Player:BB McCullum

DateLine: 19th February 2007

New Zealand’s first choice wicket keeper batsman for some time now, Brendon McCullum is an asset to the team in both Tests and ODIs and contributes immensely both behind the stumps and as a batsman who believes in hitting the ball high and hard and handsomely to all parts of the ground. He has frequently given the necessary impetus coming in late in the order when the innings seems to be faltering as a career strike rate of 76 will confirm. Coming up through the ranks McCullum first was ranked as a one day specialist given his swashbuckling style but he improved his keeping and forced his way past Robbie Hart as the Test wicket keeper in the series against South Africa in 2003-04. After making his debut against South Africa at Hamilton McCullum came of age on the tour of England in 2004 scoring 195 runs in the three Tests including a fighting 96 at Lord’s. He got his maiden Test hundred in 2004-05 on the tour of Bangladesh when he hit 143 at Dhaka. Unlucky to miss a second hundred by a single run against Sri Lanka at Napier later in the season McCullum however got his second century against Zimbabwe at Harare the following season – a run-a-ball 111. Behind the stumps he is perfectly at home while keeping to both pace and spin. He had a stint with Glamorgan in 2006.
