One of New Zealand’s leading all rounders Scott Styris has rendered yeoman service to the team’s cause in both Tests and ODIs. A right-handed middle order batsman Styris can be expected to give the much-needed fillip to the scoring rate in the late and slog overs as underlined by his career strike rate of almost 78. His right arm medium paced bowling is more suited to limited overs cricket and he has bottled up the best of batsmen with his impeccable line and length and his ability to move the ball late. But he can be pretty incisive too as he proved while taking six for 25 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 2002. Incidentally he also scored an unbeaten 63 off 72 balls in this game underlining his ubiquitous skills. His ability to make big scores is symbolized by the fact that his highest score in Tests is 170 and in ODIs it is 141. After making his debut against India on the 1999 tour Styris has been a regular in the one-day team. But he had to wait almost three years to make the Test squad and here too he has made himself an integral part of the team. Styris made his Test debut against the West Indies in Grenada a memorable one by getting 107 (at No 8) and 69 not out. He had a stint with Middlesex in 2005.
