The man who is currently the spearhead of the West Indian pace attack is expected to play this role for some time to come. Fidel Edwards is highly regarded for his pace and hostility, for his penchant to reverse swing the ball and his ability to adjust his speed according to the situation. His figures suggest that he is expensive but Edwards has this ability to strike at a crucial juncture of the match. His beginnings at the international level were quite startling. Called upon to make his Test debut after just one match for Barbados Edwards spotted at the nets by Brian Lara promptly had five-wicket hauls in his first two Tests one at home and the other overseas. He was at his deadliest against Pakistan at Bridgetown in May 2005 when he blew out the batting with innings figures of five for 38 generating speeds of 90 mph with his slinging action. Another of the West Indian pacemen susceptible to injuries Edwards has been forced to miss many matches when in form. In ODIs he is a consistent performer but is still to better the figures he notched up on his debut six for 22 against Zimbabwe at Harare in November 2003.
