East Lancs have signed 24 year-old Canterbury batsman Shanan Stewart as their new professional. The New Zealander has 1992 runs from 38 First-class matches at an average of 30.6 with a top score of 149. His right arm medium paced bowling has captured 4 wickets in a total of 83 overs sent down.

Stewart will be the club's fourth New Zealand professional following Ian Cromb (1933), Bill Merritt (1934-38) and last season's paid man Mark Orchard. He is a team-mate of new Enfield professional Brandon Hiini and the legendary Chris Harris who captains the side.

East Lancs chairman Larry Pearson said: "Shanan has played regularly for Canterbury since 2001-02 and played for New Zealand "A" in Australia last year. He played as professional for West Lothian in Scotland in 2005 scoring more than 900 runs and taking 47 wickets."

The Blackburn sides announcement leaves just Bacup without a professional.
