After a comeback into the Australian team he has never looked back scoring two hundreds during the tour of West Indies in the absence of Hayden. His scores of 113 and 157 in back to back test matches against West Indies as opener made sure that he would take the flight to tour India.

He has worked very hard to get back in the Australian squad after he lost his central contract in 2007 off season, but the selectors couldn’t ignore what he achieved in only one season in 2007-08 and he won back his place in the squad for the Test tour to West Indies.

Simon Katich broke the record for most runs in a Pura Cup season, captained New South Wales to the first-class title and registered his highest score alongwith scoring 1506 Pura Cup runs at 94.12, which surpassed the previous best in a season, Michael Bevan's 1464 at Tasmania in 2004-05. Katich was named Pura Cup Player of the Year and he was the Man of the Match in the final victory. After a solid 2000-01 season, which saw him accumulating 1282 first-class runs, including a century against every state, he was picked for the 2001 Ashes tour. He replaced the injured Steve Waugh for the fourth Test, but could only make 15 and 0 not out on debut, and then had to wait two years for another opportunity this time against Zimbabwe, when his occasional left-arm spin bowling was the centre of attraction as he took 6 for 65 in the second innings in Sydney. At the same ground later that summer, against India, he registered his maiden Test century and helped to ensure Waugh's final Test ended in a draw instead of a loss.
