Player:AD Mascarenhas

DateLine: 12th June 2008

Dimitri Mascarenhas hails from a rich cultural background, as he was born in Middlesex to Sri Lankan parents, but brought up in Perth, Western Australia. In 1996, though, Dimi as he is fondly known, returned to the country of his birth to play some professional cricket and instantly found success, as he took 6 for 88 against Glamorgan on debut for Hampshire.

He is a bits and pieces player who can bat aggressively and bowl medium pace in the middle overs plus an excellent fielder, thus proving to be a perfect player to have in the team in limited overs cricket. He has established a penchant for big games in only a short period of time and this was proven to be the case when he turned out with a Man of the Match performance in the 1998 NatWest trophy semi-final when he took 3 for 28 and scored 73.

He also featured in Hampshire's victorious C&G campaign in 2005. He also took the first hat-trick recorded in Twenty20 cricket, amongst his 5 for 14 against Sussex at Hove in 2004. He was finally given a call up to the English squad for ODIs in June 2007. He made this chance count, slapping five sixes in a single over from Yuvraj Singh at The Oval, and earning a call-up to England's Twenty20 squad on the back of some disciplined bowling performances.
