A handy all rounder, who bowls leg spin and is capable of some lusty hitting, he has been on the fringes of the Australian team for a very long team, always missing the bus for some or the other reason.

Captaining Victoria in 2003-04 at the age of 20, the youngest skipper in their history, he won rave reviews for his cool head and warm handling of more hardened contemporaries. He was picked to tour Zimbabwe when Stuart MacGill withdrew for moral reasons. He further played eight CB Series games in 2006-07, thumping a 32-ball 45 in the second match, following it up with a 42 from 19 deliveries in the Chappell-Hadlee Series. But he missed the team for the World Cup, mainly because his bowling was unconvincing.

But he had an exciting domestic season, capturing 437 Pura Cup runs at 39.72 and nine wickets at 49.77, thus managing to hold on to his Cricket Australia contract before heading to England to play for Somerset. There he hit the second fastest century in T20 history, which forced the Bangalore Royal Challengers to buy his exciting talent to play for them in the IPL.
