The Technical Committee of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier has approved Sean Weeraratna as a replacement player for Glenn Rogers in Scotland s squad for the tournament being played in Belfast, Ireland.
The confirmation was conveyed to the Cricket Scotland on behalf of the tournament Technical Committee on Sunday afternoon.
Rogers replacement was allowed on medical grounds after the off-spinner suffered a tear to his right calf muscle while bowling against Ireland in the tournament opener on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Weeraratna is an off-spinner who has represented Scotland in the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cups in 2004 and 2006 in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively.
Weeraratna made his first-class debut in 2005 and has since played in four matches with his last game being against Bermuda at Hamilton last month which Scotland won by 107 runs. In that match, he had figures of 3-14 and 0-23.
The process required for approving any player involves that players home board making an application in writing to the tournament Technical Committee for permission. In this case the application was supported by medical reports confirming Rogers injury and certifying that the player was unfit for the remaining part of the event.
The Technical Committee of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier consists of Andrew Faichney (ICC, tournament director), Richard Done (ICCs High Performance Manager) and David Kendix (ICC Cricket Committee).
