| Biography: | An article published in the Hastings and St Leonards Observer on 26th August 1916 reads: “We regret to have to announce that 2nd Lieut. Richard Pritchard died on Tuesday of his wounds received in action in France, July 20th at Lady Carnarvon’s Hospital for Officers, 48 Bryanston Square, W1H. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. David Pitchard, of Bryn-y-ewn, Wykeham Road, Hastings, and was born on October 7th, 1886. He was educated at the Grammar School, Hastings and St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1910. When war broke out he enlisted in the 5th Royal Sussex Regiment, in which regiment he gained his sergeant’s stripes and was at the Tower of London, under Colonel Langham. He was granted a commission early in 1915 and was gazetted to the 8th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment at Colchester. He later transferred to the 11th Devon’s and trained with that regiment at Wareham before sailing for Egypt in October 1915. He was six months in Egypt and was invalided home in March 1916. He went out to France in June attached to the Gloucester Regiment, and fell while leading his men. He was married on April 17th, 1915, to Miss Rosina Frances Benyon Winsor, of Baldslow Road, and leaves behind one infant daughter, who was born on the 23rd of last month.” Published: December 1915 and July 1916 |
