In order to have a chance of winning the Championships Queensland now required an outright victory and so closed their first innings with still twenty overs remaining, hoping for some quick South Australian wickets. In scoring his first run in the South Australian innings Mitchell brought his aggregate to one thousand runs in all Championships matches.
