GP Johnson (Wairarapa) returned home after the first day due to a family illness.
In the Southland first innings, AD Pierce had played a ball from RN Wylie safely down by his feet but then kicked it towards the nearest fielder without permission resulting in a half-hearted appeal from Wylie but umpire Dawson gave the batsman out "hit the ball twice" and, despite a plea from the Wairarapa captain, the umpire insisted that the batsman was out.
