James Higham must have felt pretty good at the end of the first day, his side with a 50-run first-innings lead, and John Walker out for a round O before stumps. But things turned around big time next day. StG poured on the runs, and left NY to chase 141. When the score read 59 for 7, Higham probably would have welcomed any kind of natural disaster. But Wm Crossley and Hamlyn were together and began tonking the bowling about. NY spirits rose. However, at 96, Crossley was adjudged run out by the StG umpire, Charles Vinten. The NY players swore he was not out. And a moment or two later, Elliott Fletcher was given out caught behind off Comery, again by Vinten. Fletcher hesitated, then asked of Mr Vinten how he was out. Caught said the umpire. Back at the tent, Fletcher told his captain that it wasn't so. (Higham later claimed that he had sometime afterwards spoken to Comery, and the bowler then admitted that the ball had come nowhere near the bat.) Nine wickets down. But now the agreed-on time for drawing stumps, six o'clock, had passed. No doubt in not the most pleasant mood, Higham went onto the field and demanded that play be stopped for the day. But the umpires decided to proceed. Now enraged, as I imagine it, Higham refused to send in his last batsman, Gelson. Play was called, and when Gelson failed to appear, the umpires awarded the match to StG. Higham would have none of it. Umpires have to follow the rules. Perhaps with some idea that Vinten and Wheatcroft would decide he was right, and he could claim the match if StG did not turn up, Higham and his batsmen, Hamlyn and Gelson, went to the ground on Friday morning. But it came to nothing. This ugly disagreement was not soon to be smoothed over. StG and NY did not play each other again for eight years.
