The match ended in controversy when the Napier umpire, Mr H Smith, decided that time was up when the wicket of AE Ridley fell to the first ball of what would have been the last over although apparently the ground clock showed there were still 2 minutes left. HS de Maus had run out to the middle ready to receive the next delivery. Although the Canterbury umpire also believed that there was still time remaining, Mr Smith insisted that time had been reached and despite a protest from the Canterbury captain, LA Cuff, the match ended in a draw.
