After winning the toss Church captain T Barnes asked Accrington captain John Moore if Accrington were playing a second professional Stubbins from Huddersfield. When Moore confirmed this Barnes stated that Church would not play the match. Church also called the second team match off and threatened not to play the return fixture at Accrington. Church then decided to 'eat' their decision but Accrington said it was too late and left the ground.
