Durham won this return match at 4.10 pm on the second day after being set a victory target of 149 runs in over four hours.
The encounter between the two teams at Darlington in June had been drawn.
For the winners, W F Whitwell took 11 wickets in the match for 147 runs, including 7 for 74 in the Cheshire first innings.
Smith's 74 for Cheshire included 14 fours.
