Wiltshire won this return match by an innings on the second day, after Monmouthshire followed on 94 runs behind. They thus completed the double over Monmouthshire, having also won when the two sides met at Newport in July. The start of the match was delayed when Wiltshire objected to the inclusion in the visitors' team of Steeples, on the grounds that he had played for Derbyshire in First-Class County Championship matches earlier in the season and, as a consequence, was ineligible to play in the Minor Counties competition. Eventually, F Phillips, the Monmouthshire Captain, decided to play with just ten men, with Steeples acting as substitute fielder. There are more details about this dispute in the introduction to the book. Awdry top-scored for the winners with 67.
