In this drawn match, Cambridgeshire were set a victory target of 302 in 150 minutes. With 4 wickets down for 8 runs, a Northumberland win looked likely, but Watts, Mouel and Hayward saved the match for Cambridgeshire. For the visitors, Watts's 113 contained 23 fours and 7 twos, whilst his first innings 62 included 12 fours. Watts's match aggregate of 175 runs was the third highest of the season. The Cambridgeshire second innings total of 205-6 wickets was the highest fourth innings score during the season, and Watts's 113 was the highest individual score in the fourth innings during the year, and a new record for the Championship, exceeding the 112 scored by F G H Clayton for Northumberland versus Northamptonshire at Northampton in 1896. The 56 extras conceded by the visitors in the match were the most during the season. For Northumberland, Clayton had scores of 62 with 7 fours, and 70 with 9 fours. Hansell's 69 included 10 fours and Walters's 59 not out contained 9 fours. In the Northumberland first innings, Hansell and Clayton put on 132 runs for the third wicket, which was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season. The match aggregate of 938 runs was the highest of the season.
The 186 runs conceded in the match by O'Connor, and the 176 by Hayward were the two highest match totals of the year, and O'Connor's was a new 'record' for the Championship, exceeding the 179 conceded by G Dunn for Hertfordshire versus Buckinghamshire at Aylesbury in 1897. Playing only 4 championship matches -- home and away against Cambridgeshire and Norfolk -- Northumberland did not qualify for the final table.
