Northamptonshire won this return match at 4.10 pm on the second day after Staffordshire followed on 199 runs behind on first innings. The match at Stoke-on-Trent in June had been drawn. For the winners, there were 17 fours, 8 threes and 8 twos in Thompson's 134, an innings which lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes. T A Brown's 77 was scored in 90 minutes and included 1 five and 10 fours. In the Northamptonshire innings, Thompson and Brown put on 140 runs for the fifth wicket, which was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season. For the losers, Gardner top-scored with 44.
