Berkshire won this return match by an innings and 187 runs on the second day, thus reversing the result of the match at Banbury at the beginning of August. The margin of victory was the biggest during the season and a new record for the Championship, exceeding the innings and 178 runs by which Worcestershire beat Hertfordshire at Watford in 1897. A heavy overnight thunderstorm changed the nature of the pitch and Oxfordshire were dismissed twice in a day, after following on 338 runs behind and with 4¾ hours to bat to save the match. For the winners, L G A Collins and Dauglish put on 224 for the first wicket, which was also a new record for the Championship for that wicket, beating the 179 put on by C Pigg and F Wells for Hertfordshire v Staffordshire at Stoke-on-Trent earlier in the season. There were 19 fours, 2 threes and 12 twos in L G A Collins's 139, scored in 10 minutes short of four hours, whilst Dauglish's 120, an innings of 2 hours and 40 minutes, included 17 fours, 3 threes and 10 twos. L P Collins scored 59 not out and Croome 53. The Berkshire total of 399 runs was the third highest of the season. Barker took 12 wickets in the match for 103 runs. Croome held four catches in the slips in the Oxfordshire first innings, and a further two in their second innings. The six catches taken in the match equalled the Championship record previously set by H P Justice for Oxfordshire v Wiltshire at Trowbridge in 1896 and J Saunders for Buckinghamshire v Oxfordshire at Aylesbury in 1897. For the losers, in their second innings Deane and A Rogers added 51 runs for the eighth wicket. Shortly after lunch on the first day C C Bradford, the Oxfordshire captain, damaged a hand when fielding and his opposite number, Croome, agreed to Wood, who also took over the captaincy, replacing him. In the Oxfordshire averages, Bradford and Wood are both counted as having played in this match. All sources listed give the runs conceded in the Berkshire innings as being 4 short.
[Missing: Extras breakdown; in Berkshire inns boundaries in L P Collins's 59 and Croome's 53, fall of 2nd wicket, and runs conceded by Oxon bowlers 4 short; time completed.]
