Start delayed on the second day until 2.45pm owing to rain
This 'local derby' match ended as a draw, with Durham needing 53 runs to win with 9 wickets in hand. Rain delayed the start on the second day until 2.45 pm. Durham required in their second innings 77 runs to win in an hour and 20 minutes, but further rain ended play 40 minutes early. For the visitors, W F Whitwell and Turnbull bowled unchanged through both Northumberland innings. It was the only such instance during the season. Turnbull took 12 wickets in the match for 97 runs, including 8-54 in the first Northumberland innings which was statistically the best innings bowling performance of the season.
W F Whitwell took 8 wickets in the match for 86 runs. Elliot's 51, containing 7 fours, was scored in an hour. When he took his fifth wicket in the Northumberland second innings, W F Whitwell achieved the career milestone of a hundred wickets in the Championship.
