Nottinghamshire 2nd XI won this close match by two wickets at 5.20 pm on the second day. The result was all the more surprising as Yorkshire looked at one stage as being in a position to make the home team follow on. In the Nottinghamshire first innings, 12 runs had been needed to save the follow-on when Clifton, the last man, came in to bat to join his captain Staunton. For the winners, Barnes took 10 wickets in the match for 101 runs. James top-scored with 49, which contained 5 fours. For the losers, there were 10 fours in Bates's 65, 5 fours in Richardson's 64 and 4 fours in Oldroyd's 51. In the Yorkshire first innings, Oldroyd and Richardson put on 117 runs for the fifth wicket. The margin of victory for a team batting last was the joint closest of the season. The 18 maidens bowled by Riley in the Yorkshire first innings were the joint highest of the season, and the 27 maidens he bowled in the match were the second highest.
