Staffordshire won this return match by four wickets at 5.30 pm on the second day after Durham had failed to save the follow-on by 5 runs. The match between the two sides at Wearmouth in June had also been won by Staffordshire. For the winners, Barnes took 13 wickets in the match for 91 runs, including 8 for 30 in the Durham first innings. There were 3 fours in Brigg's 66. For Durham, Thackeray took 9 wickets in the match for 93 runs. J Bewick top-scored with 39 not out, an innings of 1½ hours containing 5 fours. There was one run out in the Durham first innings and three in the second.
