Northumberland won this first match of Staffordshire's Northern tour by 49 runs at 4.40 pm. After being bowled out for 41 in 1 hour 20 minutes in the first innings they turned the game around.
Barnes match figures of 13-73 for Staffordshire were slightly outshone by Elsey's 13-65 for Northumberland in a match dominated by the bowling. Staffordshire were 19-3 wickets when three hours were lost to heavy rain on the Monday from 2.20 to 5.40 pm and as reported it was soon evident that the weather had not improved the pitch. Richardson was absent on the second day following the death of his sister.
Staffordshire's second innings started at 3pm being set 121 to win. They were bowled out in an hour and 40 minutes, Hollowood being ninth out having made 38 of the 70 runs scored. The attendance on the second day was 2000.
