Staffordshire won this match by an innings and 59 runs on the second day. The feature of the Staffordshire innings was the brilliant batting of Meakin and Taylor, each of whom passed the century. Meakin’s innings of 116 came in 2 hours 40 mins and included 10 fours. Taylor’s 102 took 1 hour 40 mins and included 1 six, 1 five, and 13 fours. They added 159 for the fifth wicket. Overnight Surrey had lost 5 wickets for 84, and then on the last day of the match, Sedgwick caused a sensational collapse, the remaining five batsmen being out for in fifteen minutes for an additional four runs. He finished with 5 for 30. Following on 283 runs behind Surrey made a better show against the Staffordshire attack but were bowled out for 224. For the losers Myers took 7 for 120 in the Staffordshire innings.
