Surrey 2nd XI won this close match by one wicket just before 6.00 pm on the second day. Needing 108 runs to win in 3 hours, Surrey's ninth wicket fell 3 runs short of victory. Marshall and Clode saw them home, the game being won on an overthrow. For the winners, Barker top-scored with 47. Nice took 8 wickets for 34 runs in the match, including 5 for 8 in the Northumberland first innings. For the losers, Bell's 70 not out included 1 five and 6 fours. In the Northumberland second innings, Bell and Nichol added 80 runs for the seventh wicket and Bell and Hartley 52 for the eighth. Play on the second day was delayed by rain and did not start until 12.30 pm. The margin of victory was the smallest of the season, and equalled the record for the Championship.
